The following medications have been shown to improve outcome and survival in patients who have already had one heart attack (myocardial infarction) even if there are none of the usual reasons for prescribing them:

Risk factor modification is also crucial, particularly with regard to smoking cessation and lowering cholesterol levels. Exercise is important but should not be started until the doctor gives the go ahead. Cardiac rehabilitation programs are particularly beneficial. These provide an opportunity to perform aerobic exercises as well as light weight lifting under the direct supervision of nurses, physical therapists and exercise physiologists. this is one of the best ways to regain physical stamina after a heart attack.
