DIGOXIN |
This is also known as digitalis, Digitek, Lanoxin and Lanoxicaps.
It is derived from the leaves of the foxglove plant (Digitalis purpurea) and has been used medicinally since the days of the ancient Egyptians and the Roman Empire.
It increases the amount of calcium inside the cells of the heart and causes the heart muscle to beat stronger. This alleviates the symptoms of heart failure caused by weak heart muscle.
It is also effective for controlling certain types of abnormal heart rhythms.
At therapeutic levels, side effects are very uncommon. If the level in the blood gets too high, the earliest symptoms are usually nausea and vomiting.
